Monthly Archives: January 2010The last few days are really testing our calving setup. Until Sunday we did not have to worry about the wind or temperature. Now we are having to watch the cows hourly as it has been at least -20C with a strong wind. A calves ears will freeze in about 10 minutes and a hour... We are selling a group of steers on the DLMS Internet sale this Thursday so I thought I better get my 2009 calves age verified. The Canadian Angus Association would have done this for me but it was almost easier to do it myself. In about an hour I age verified 325 calves with a starting... So we calve in the barn or right behind it depending on the temperature. The calves spend their first 12 to 24 hours there, and that works very well. Then we move them to the back shed. It holds about 10-15 pairs and allows them to get use to finding one another in a group. ... We were able to get all the early 2009 calves weighed today. They are still a few weeks away from averaging 365 days of age, but we need to begin working on the catalogue.
